last few thoughts in Taiwan

i reached the official end of my 3 week elective posting in the Tzu Chi Hospital and left with a pang of sadness. heh. i'll miss that place. particularly bcz the surgeon i attached with in this last week was most kind, patient and really fatherly. he specializes in Breast and Endocrine Surgery and has taught me a lot about reading sonograms and mammograms in clinic and the OT. even allowed me to scrub in for a thyroid surgery. that's another story grins i was creating a mini chaos in the OT with the scrub nurse and anaes dr. trying to instruct me in mandarin to make sure i donned on the sterile apron and gloves correctly. extremely pai seh...

i previously mentioned i had knowledge ego problem lol hee and had loads of trouble reading chinese characters off the computer etc. i had wanted to give up and go back to msia to tell juniors who were so called bananas like me not to do an attachment in taiwan. but i've had a change of mind. :D

i seriously learnt a lot in this hospital. not just knowledge wise, dissecting ecg charts and x rays and ultrasounds (still horrible at it but less blur), but humanity wise.

the nurses and dr.s here treat the patients really really well. the rapport established is extremely strong and the patients love their dr.s. ev1 treats one another with utmost respect. ev1 greets each other in the hallway / wards / lunch place. regardless whether they know you or ur status. i never saw enough of this back in msia.

and technical barriers can be overcome. hehe. its also partly bcz i've got friends doing the attachment with me and helped me a lot in reading signs and all that. i'm not sure if my mandarin improved? grins. but i picked out (not up) some taiwanese accents that i find pretty amusing teehee. so... i think i would really recommend ppl who are even tho partial bananas like me to come attach here. :D

owh! and i found a cousin i've never met before in taipei. huge surprise lol. but extremely pleasant. heheh.

its my last day touring taipei today b4 i head home and start sch again. i'll miss this place. XP

starting 4th year with psychiatry. wish me luck. :P

hi xu vin...i totally agree with you on your 4th para where you said everyone was kind to one another. that is definitely lacking here...recently, i had to deal with some ppl for my dessertation and their attitudes really got me down. it's like they immediately assume that you're out to 'hurt' them, their position, or just basically to cause trouble. even hospital postings are upsetting for that one reason. doctors just walk past students like they don't exist. it's really great that you got to experience the right attitudes and environment.

hey lo :), its nice getting ur comment. i guess all of us in the bottom of the hierarchy are doomed to face this sort of treatment till we climb up the ladder. we'll make a difference when we're there. :D

Hi,is there any other advice for those who will be going to Tzu chi hospital for d elective postings?

Xu Vin said...

hi abigail, are u a ukm medic junior? :) that was a question out of curiosity. anw, a short advice would be to bring related medical books to the posting u are attaching with along with you - like those pocket books, choose postings u're interested in / want exposure / want to learn more. i chosed respi and cardio and general surgery. sounds a bit dull but it strengthened my x ray and ecg reading skills. hehe. my friends who attached w new stuff like chinese traditional medicine really enjoyed their posting too. if u wana know more, feel free to ask / meet me. thr's a lot to tell :D

Hi there! another medical student here yearning for some advice.
your elective sounds like an eye opening experience.

Any pointers on how to apply, or info around the net about it for that matter?

can't seem to get the tzu chi links about the whole application process...

would really appreciate your help!
thanks in advance!

and er oh yeah, how much would you judge the % of mandarin to be used in the hospital?
and whether they use like super a lot of chinese med terms...

LOL

Hi there :)
about application process previously I applied through the tzu chi society in my uni. but currently i heard if u apply through the msia tzu chi society they have a quota of 3 students per uni. for this i think just call up the association to ask about it. their office or hotline or stg. if u cant get through, leave ur email here n i'll refer u to my friend who's in the society.

another way is to apply directly to the Tzuchi General Hospital in Hualien directly. seems easier to get in this way. think for this u can email them / call up their hotline to enquire too. http://www.tzuchi.com.tw/tzuchi_en/About_HL_Center/Default.htm

there was a student from aimst who contacted me recently to ask about this. he's back from there js few mths back. leave ur email n i can refer u to him if u want to.

i'd say 70% mandarin speech wise. they knew my mandarin wasnt good so they spoke to me in english. but case presentations n discussion are mostly in mandarin. but if u understand simple mandarin that shud be alright. medical terms are in english. it'll be good to go with a friend who can read chinese characters so dat u don't get totally lost direction wise n to read off the computer.

Thanks!! I think im gonna apply there directly too. Can read Chinese but it's next to hopeless if they're gonna use med terms all the time aikssss.
